On Friday, March 28, the Van Meter Student Conservation Club (VMSCC) participated in a service project at Kuehn Conservation, north of Earlham, facilitated by Dallas County naturalists.
✅ The first task was removing wire fencing from young oak trees in preparation for a controlled burn—crucial to oak savanna habitat.
✅ The second task was dismantling an aged willow/ironwood ceremony structure near the Nature Center. The structure will be rebuilt for Kuehn’s annual Prairie Awakening event in September.
✅ Next, we enjoyed the beautiful weather by hiking Kuehn’s trails down to the river valley.
✅ Finally, student volunteers planted germination trays with native seeds they stratified at our in-house January VMSCC event. Species included compass plant, New England aster, purple prairie clover, wild white indigo, and gray-headed coneflower. In eight weeks, VMSCC will transplant young native prairie plants to "cone-tainers," and in June, those will reach their final destination when students plant them in the prairie at Kuehn—where the seed was originally harvested.
Thank you, DCCB, for a great experience! Great work, VMSCC!
