Last weekend, 18 members of the Van Meter Secondary Student Conservation Club participated in their Spring Service Project and campout at Whiterock Conservancy in Guthrie County! 🌲

The group completed three hours of volunteer work alongside Whiterock Conservancy staff and Green Iowa AmeriCorps members, focusing on invasive brush removal at an ongoing prairie restoration site.

After the service project, students enjoyed hiking, fishing, camping, and relaxing around the fire. On Sunday morning, they welcomed Kay Newman from S.O.A.R. (Saving Our Avian Resources), who led an up-close educational session about red-tailed hawks, as well as threats and simple solutions for protecting hawks, falcons, waterfowl, and songbird species in Iowa. Students also witnessed the release of a juvenile red-tailed hawk that had been rehabilitated at the S.O.A.R. facility. 🐦

Special thanks to Kay Newman and Tyler Bruck, Land Stewardship Director at Whiterock Conservancy, for helping make this meaningful and rewarding experience possible for VMSCC.
