On Thursday, October 29, 15 high school art students from Collaborative Art and Advanced Art classes visited Mainframe Studios and the Pappajohn Sculpture Park! 🎨

While at Mainframe Studios, students toured several artists' studios and participated in a mixed-media workshop. Some of their favorite highlights included learning about the art of felting from fiber artist Megan Hammer, visiting Kyle Kirwan’s designer toy studio and Jess Quinn’s painting studio, watching glassblowing demonstrations at JJ Gaffers Glass Blowing Studio, and creating their own works of art to take home during the workshop.

The day wrapped up with lunch and a walk through the sculpture park!

Last week, 22 members of the Van Meter Student Conservation Club (grades 8-12) visited Jester Park Outdoor Recreation Center, where they participated in a prairie seed cleaning service project. 🌿

A Polk County Naturalist led them in the handling, stripping, and gathering of a drought-resistant native prairie seed species called Rough Blazing Star (Liatris aspera). The seed will be cleaned, sold to citizens who are restoring prairie on their properties, or planted in Polk County’s production plots for transplant to county parks.

VMSCC then traveled to Dallas County Voas Wildlife Refuge, took a hike in the rain, and were lucky enough to spot migratory tiger salamanders as the rarely seen native amphibians returned to their overwintering wetland areas. Overall, it was a busy morning of service and appreciation of Iowa’s unique natural resources. ⭐
